Two midwives, one whānau-centred practice.
Hana Midwifery was established by Ana and Harriet, two midwives passionate about supporting whānau throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postnatal period. Every pregnancy journey is unique. Every whānau comes with their own experiences, values, hopes, and challenges, and getting to know the people we care for is central to providing safe, personalised, compassionate maternity care.
Our philosophy is centred on partnership, informed choice, and continuity of care. We're committed to sharing evidence-based information and supporting you to make the decisions that feel right for you and your whānau, respected, heard, and empowered throughout your maternity journey.
We support physiological pregnancy and birth, and care for those planning to birth at home, in a primary birthing unit, or in hospital. Whatever your birth preferences, we'll work alongside you to help you feel informed, supported, and confident in your choices. If complications arise, we work closely with obstetric and specialist teams, and as your Lead Maternity Carers (LMCs), we stay involved in your care throughout.

Anahera "Ana" Ngatai
Midwife & Co-FounderAna works in partnership with you to make sure you feel listened to, informed, and empowered to make decisions that align with your values. She approaches every whānau with an open mind, kindness and compassion, providing full maternity care from early pregnancy right through the postnatal period, arranging initial blood tests, scans and supplements, and offering continuity of care throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and beyond.

Harriet Jefferies
Midwife & Co-FounderBorn in England and raised in Whakatāne, Harriet's approach is centred around putting you at ease, listening to your needs, and supporting a confident birth experience that aligns with your own values, with cultural celebration woven throughout your parenthood journey. She brings experience from rural midwifery practice in Tairāwhiti and hospital midwifery at Wellington Regional Hospital, and attends births at home, in birthing units, and in hospital.
Looking ahead, Hana Midwifery is also excited to be welcoming a new graduate midwife, Petra, to the practice in 2027.
Continuity of care, built for real life
Harriet and Ana work as a team to provide safe, reliable continuity of care throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postnatal period. Your chosen midwife will be your primary midwife and will provide most of your care. We keep each other up to date about all of the whānau in our care, so if your primary midwife is unavailable, the other is already familiar with your pregnancy and can step in when needed.
To maintain a sustainable workload, we alternate weekends off and cover each other's caseloads during this time. We also provide backup for one another if the other midwife is attending a birth or otherwise unavailable.
Our aim is that you build a relationship with both midwives during your pregnancy, while still having a clearly identified primary midwife. This approach lets us provide genuine continuity of care, while ensuring there is always a midwife available who knows your situation and can support you when needed.
"We feel privileged to walk alongside families during such an important time in their lives."
